China's Lithium-ion materials speed up 'sea journey'

Since 2022, tianci Materials, Rongbai Technology, BAMo Technology, Guotai Huarong and Xingyuan materials and other lithium electric materials have accelerated their overseas layout, successively won overseas orders or accelerated the progress of overseas capacity expansion.

On July 4, Ruitai New Materials announced that its controlling subsidiary Guotai Huarong signed a 6-year pre-purchase agreement with FREYR Battery Norway AS for a total purchase amount of approximately $526 million.

Under the agreement, Cathay Huarong will supply FREYR with lithium battery electrolyte products from 2023 to 2028, effective June 30, 2022.

FREYR is a Norwegian manufacturer of clean energy batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage and ships. Plants in Finland and the United States are planned to provide up to 43GWh of battery capacity by 2025 and up to 83GWh of annual capacity by 2028.

Guotai Huarong is not the first Chinese material company to obtain an order from FREYR, which also signed a pre-order agreement with Xingyuan material for over 6 years.

On June 15, Changzhou Xingyuan, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xingyuan Material, signed a purchase agreement with FREYR, in which Changzhou Xingyuan will supply FREYR with wet lithium ion battery diaphragm material from the effective date of the agreement to December 31, 2028.

In fact, in addition to Guotai Huarong and Xingyuan Materials, in the first half of 2022, including Rongbai Technology, Tianci Materials, Bamo Technology and other lithium materials are accelerating their overseas layout.

At the end of May, BAMo Technology announced that it planned to subscribe 49% equity of LGBCM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of LG Chem, for the joint construction of NCMA cathode material project with an annual output of 66,000 tons.

In early June, Tianci Materials announced a capital increase of about 120 million yuan for its wholly-owned subsidiary tianci Materials, to enhance the capital strength of Tianci Germany and further strengthen its internationalization strategy. Tianci materials plans to set up factories in the United States, Europe and other places, basically covering the main overseas customer circle.

On June 30, the lithium cathode material project in Chungju, South Korea, invested and constructed by Jaishi Energy Co., LTD., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rongbai Technology, was completed. The actual annual production capacity of the project is 80,000 tons, mainly high nickel and ultra high nickel anode.

As the core battleground of global electrification, China has a leading edge in the manufacturing of core materials for power batteries, with positive materials accounting for 42%, negative materials 65%, electrolytes 65% and diaphragm 43% of the world.

Based on this, a number of high-quality lithium battery materials enterprises have already obtained overseas orders and accelerated "going out", and have set up subsidiaries and invested in supporting projects in one or more countries.

As European and American economies accelerate to embrace electrification, China's supply chain relies on years of accumulated technological reserves, industrial chain supporting facilities and large-scale manufacturing competitiveness, a group of Chinese lithium enterprises with core strength are deeply involved in the construction of their battery industry, and also ushered in new opportunities for development.

N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) belongs to nitrogen heterocyclic compound, is a non-toxic, high boiling point, strong polarity, low viscosity, small corrosion, large solubility, low volatility, good stability, easy recovery of highly selective solvent. It is a very important auxiliary material in the production of lithium ion battery, generally used as a positive electrode coating solvent, or as a lithium battery conductive slurry solvent.

Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) is a new conductive agent for lithium ion batteries. It can reduce the internal resistance of electrodes, improve the circulation at room temperature and high temperature, improve the energy density, and provide excellent conductivity for lithium ion batteries.
