Blackstone analysts Byron Wien and Joe Zidle warned that an unexpected shortage of lithium batteries could pose risks to the upside for the electric vehicle industry, Zitong Finance App learned.

Wien and Zidle listed lithium batteries as one of the top 10 surprises to watch for in 2022.

"The United States' green energy program has suffered a setback as it finds it cannot buy enough lithium batteries to power the electric vehicles it plans to produce," they said.  China dominates the market for lithium, as well as cobalt and nickel used to make transmission rods, and has chosen to retain much of the supply of these commodities for domestic use."

Blackstone sees Lithium Americas, Standard Lithium, Rock Tech Lithium Inc, Albermarle, and Livent Corporation as Lithium battery companies to watch.

Meanwhile, electric car makers like Tesla, General Motors, Ford, Fisker, Rivian Automotive and Lucid Group are all looking to reduce battery costs while expanding scale.
