Since alternatives to lithium batteries are so hard to come by, scientists continue to reinvent the switch.

A research team from the University of Texas at Austin has found that several metal oxides have physical energy storage capabilities that exceed theoretical limits.Currently, the standard way for batteries to store energy is to move lithium ions through the material, or to convert the material's crystal structure.

With these metal oxides, energy can be stored either in the transition metal oxides or on the reduced surface of the metal nanoparticles formed during low potential discharges of the transition metal oxides LIBs.

The results so far suggest that this approach could double or even triple the power capacity of current standard lithium-ion batteries. For the average user, that means smartphones can last several days.More importantly, it will not sacrifice the battery life, and the size will be further reduced.

This study shows that the charge capacity of some materials is the main source of battery capacity exceeding the standard. This additional surface capacitance is present in Fe?O?, NiO, FeF?And Fe?In the N system.

Such schemes are easier to implement than innovative ones, and certainly faster to commercialise.
